Why would you oppose a Gandhi statue in Zilker Park? What would Willie do? Read more…

Gandhi statue in Cleveland where they also hold a yearly One World celebration

Civic pride is good — it’s even inspired Austin’s board game. But how could anyone claim to love Austin’s vibe and then oppose a statue of the ultimate icon for world peace?

Gandhi inspired MLK Jr., Nelson Mandela and other leaders who changed the world, yet some Austinites say we should only erect statues of locals. One person said Gandhi had no impact on Austin! Apparently, he didn’t have enough impact if we still have people that ignorant.

Come on, Austin, think bigger. Ironically, if we could have a statue of Gandhi, I’d be willing to bet that our own Willie Nelson would be first in line to play at the dedication.

  1. Keely says:

Good point. And of course Gandhi influenced Austin since he influenced the world.

  2. Thomas Nyman says:

If we can have streets named after non-austinites such as MLK and Caeser Chavez, then certainly we should be able to acknowledge Ghandi!
